So, second year is here and already it's completely different to first year. Of course it should be, but I didn't expect it to be! First year was spent getting used to being away from home, finding your way around the millions of buildings the university has, getting to know friends on your course, getting to know your tutors, feeling confident in the workshop, feeling brave enough to ask for help as well as completing all the projects you have been set! It was a manic year. But a year where I settled into discovering me.
I am now in my 3rd month of second year and because I haven't had the pressure of settling into a new place and meeting new people I have thrown myself into my projects.
Our first project was to create a product that could be sold in the David Mellor store. David Mellor is well known for his cutlery and he has two stores, one in Sloane Square and one in Hathersage in the Peak District-only 25 minutes away from unversityi. It was a short project, only lasting 5 weeks and at first I thought it was impossible to research, design and develop and create in that time. Mentally I am still in the time frame we were given for A-Levels where we had a whole year to complete a project. I compare university projects to A-Levels and I then realise-Furniture Design is the only 'subject' I take. My lectures are based on this project and my tutorials are based on this project. I live and breathe a project and recently I have finally understood that this is my career.
It's fab!
I use my imagination day in and day out to create the best product I can achieve. 5 weeks doesn't sound long enough, but every hour of those 35 days are focused on this project. I can do it. And this is what designers do. They work at a fast pace and they finish their project at a high standard. And as soon as one project is finished, its straight onto the next one. My next brief is a live one. We have been set a brief by an interior company and by the end of the 12 weeks we have to pitch our idea to them.
I am at the beginning of becoming a "Proper Designer". I can't wait to see how I progress during this year and how I grow as a designer.
